With the assistance of Dr. Leonard Conolly and the University of Guelph, the new "Barry Morse Collection" has been established as a part of the L.W. Conolly Theatre Archive at the University. Anthony Wynn (pictured above with Dr. Conolly) visited the University and Archive and deposited the first of the documents and memorabilia to be catalogued and processed by the University staff. Since 1969 the University of Guelph Library has assembled theatre collections, named L.W. Conolly Theatre Archives in 1999, focused on Bernard Shaw; modern Ontario theatre companies; and playwrights, actors, directors, and designers active in Canadian theatre life. During this time, the Library's commitment has grown significantly to the point that it has become the largest collection devoted to professional Canadian theater and Shaw related materials in Canada.

London, UK - Tuesday, March 17, 2009 is the debut, on the acclaimed website "Musical Talk", of a never-before-broadcast recording of actor Barry Morse. The Barry Morse Tribute episode of Musical Talk will be posted/published to the web in Episode #126. Barry discusses his involvement with the classic musical Salad Days by Julian Slade. It was produced by Barry Morse and Bill Freedman, and Barry both starred in and directed the show. Salad Days originally played in Canada and then transferred to Broadway. The title was taken from William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra: "My salad days, When I was green in judgment, cold in blood, To say as I said then!" The phrase is now used to refer to one's days of youthful inexperience. Episode 126 will be featured on the front page of the Musical Talk website for a week and then added to their permanent archive so that others can listen to it for many weeks and months to come. Matt Butts, a fan of Barry Morse (as well as the late writer Johnny Byrne), is a singer with the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. He very kindly sponsored two poinsettia plants - one in memory of Barry Morse and one for Johnny Byrne. These beautiful plants adorned the stage at the recent 2008 Annual Holiday Concert of the Chorus. (Above is a photo of Matt pictured with the plants and a scan of the dedications section from the Concert Program.) The program was entitled Peace and was performed at the Ted Mann Concert Hall on December 12, 13 and 14, 2008. It featured odes to peace such as Peace like a River and Holly Near’s The Great Peace March. Other pieces included the rapturous finale of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ inspiring Dona Nobis Pacem (Give us peace), works from the 16th-Century composer Guilio Caccini, a touching and dramatic rendition of Silent Night, and a heart-stirring arrangement of O Holy Night. Matt said:
"I sing with the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus. We have a standing tradition
in the Chorus that for our holiday concert, members and supporters of the
Chorus purchase poinsettias to decorate the stage, either in honor of loved
ones or in memory of those who have passed on. These dedications are printed
in the program. This year, I bought two of the potted poinsettias... one
dedicated to Barry Morse and one dedicated to Johnny Byrne. The poinsettias
themselves are donated to charity (in this case, a local facility that
provides services to people with HIV and AIDS). I felt this a fitting tribute
to two people who have so shaped me into the person I am today."
"It was good to have known you." - From 'The Black Sun' (Space: 1999)

The series Waking the Dead is a police drama set in the Cold Case Unit that has been hailed as one of the very best on British television. Barry guest starred in the two-part episode "Blind Beggar" from 2002. Workmen are burrowing in the crypt of a Catholic church when they come across the skeletal remains of a young man buried in concrete. The squad sets about trying to pinpoint the identity of the body, and then discover a possible biological connection between the former parish priest, Father Stuart (Morse), and the first victim. It's available for as low as $28.95 at Amazon.com for the complete first series (including Barry's two episodes).

Warner Home Video and The BBC have announced that The Henry James Collection will be released to DVD on January 13th. Works of the classic author (1843-1916) have a long history of television adaptions, and BBC Video is collecting several of their productions based on his stories into one
collectible 5-DVD package, to include: The Golden Bowl (1972; 6-part mini-series starring Barry Morse); The Spoils of Poynton (1970; 4-part mini-series): The Portrait of a Lady (1968; 6-part mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain); The Wings of the Dove (1979; an episode of the BBC program Play of the Month); and The American (1998 telefilm starring Matthew Modine and Diana Rigg). As well, Barry Morse's episode of the Quinn Martin sci-fi series The Invaders, entitled "The Life Seekers", will be released to DVD on January 27, 2009, as part of the 2nd season release of that series. LONDON, UK - I’m very sorry to announce that Barry Morse passed away yesterday, Saturday, February 2nd, at 8:00 am at University College Hospital in London, England. Barry was a friend, mentor, and one of the most kind and generous men that Robert E. Wood and I have ever known. One of his final duties as President of the London Shaw Society was to attend and chair their most recent meeting, held on Friday, January 25th. I want everyone on the list to know that I will continue as webmaster and will maintain this official website, with the assistance and advice of Robert E. Wood. This official website was sanctioned by Barry Morse nine years ago.
There is so much yet to discuss in Barry's very long and distinguished career - from stage to radio to television to film. As well, there are yet to be releases to CD and DVD of various shows in which Barry has starred, some not seen in many years. We want to be here to talk about these things and we hope that you will poke your head in and support this site from time to time. There are many things to look forward to, including the continuing releases of The Fugitive to DVD, a new book, the release to CD of Rogues and Vagabonds: A Theatrical Scrapbook (his final radio performance), and so much more! We know as well, that you will want to be around to hear about the DVD release of his incredible one-man show Merely Players (which he performed around the world), that will include a special segment on The Fugitive, specially written for the television production. It will also include a number of "extras", including scenes not shown in the original broadcast, as well as a new never-before-heard commentary track recorded by Barry in studio prior to his death. These are all exciting things - and we look forward to sharing them with you.
- Anthony Wynn

Classic Radio Plays Now Available on CD and Cassette!
Now available are two classic audio productions starring Barry Morse, from the Radio Theater of Chicago, directed and produced by Yuri Rasovsky. These are not mere readings, but rather full performances using all the resources of audio to full advantage. Just as stage plays are "opened up" when adapted to film, these selections create greater intimacy. "Staginess" is avoided, lively theatrics enhanced, while the substance of the works remain intact. The Tempest (starring Barry as 'Prospero') composed by Shakespeare as a multisensory theater experience, features music on Elizabethan instruments still extant from Shakespeare's own production, resulting in lyrical textual passages, overflowing with exotic images, tantalizing sounds, and a palpable lushness. When the ground-breaking serialized dramatization The Odyssey of Homer (starring Barry as 'Odysseus') premiered on 320 U.S. radio stations, critics were unanimous in their praise, calling it "a feast for the ears" and "a magnificent blend of scholarship and showmanship." It won numerous honors including the George Foster Peabody Award, the Pulitzer Prize of Broadcasting. Never before or since has such an ambitious undertaking been attempted in public radio--and it was accomplished, not by a major network, but by a small non-profit independent producer in Chicago. For more information about purchasing these great programs, go to Blackstone Audio.
